The Collegium of the Victoria Conservatory of Music

Sunday, June 21, 2009 - 2 pm

The concert will feature performers from the Victoria Conservatory's Collegium Program for Young Musicians, directed by Dr. Jamie Syer. The Collegium consists of outstanding teenage musicians who, during the course of the year, participate in master classes, chamber music, and a variety of other special activities. Collegium students consistently distinguish themselves with their fine playing in recitals, festivals and competitions; we're pleased to to welcome them to St. Michael's Presents... for our last concert of the season.  This program will be a fundraiser for the Collegium Program.

In the photo are, l-r Philip Manning (violin), Rebecca Genge (voice), Heather MacLeod (voice), Braden Young (piano), Monica Green (piano). Also performing will be Paul Winkelmans (voice).

These are all members of the Collegium Program for Young Musicians who have distinguished themselves as outstanding performers over the past year. The concert program will be selected from their current repertoire, including music by Beethoven, Lalo, Monteverdi, Brahms, and others. We will present music for various combinations of violin, piano, and voice.

The Collegium is currently completing its fourth year of operation, and has been described, by one of our enthusiastic faculty, as "likely one of the best, if not THE best, program for young musicians in BC". Students are chosen by audition, and we give them a demanding curriculum of lessons, ensemble music, master classes, performances, history and theory, and special music seminars. There are currently 40 students in the Collegium--a number that we think is ideal because it is large enough to create a sense of 'community' without overloading our resources. We ask a lot from them in terms of commitment and dedication to exploring their musical talent, and they never fail to inspire us with their energy and creativity!

In order to keep the Collegium accessible to all those who can benefit from it, student fees cover only about half of the cost of operation. The balance is provided through an endowment administered by the Victoria Foundation, as well as generous donations from individual and corporate donors. We are always looking for sponsors interested in furthering the development of these young musicians by supporting the Collegium.

Members of the Collegium are consistent winners in local and provincial music festivals, as well as other competitions here and across Canada.

The concert in Chemainus is important for these performers individually, and for the program as a whole. It offers us a chance to 'show off' some of the best of what we have to offer. We thank you for the opportunity!
