New Music for a New Year in a New Decade of the New Millennium!January 24, 2 pmDuring the first decade of the 18th century, Bach wrote his first cantata and Handel presented his opera, “Almira.” In the first decade of the 19th century, Beethoven wrote five of his nine symphonies, including the “Eroica” and the “Pastoral,” as well as his “Emperor” piano concerto. Between 1900 and 1910, there was an enormous flowering of creativity, in which the world was blessed with masterpieces such as Puccini’s operas Tosca and Madame Butterfly, Rachmaninoff’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 2, Debussy’s La Mer, Stravinsky’s Firebird ballet, and symphonies by Elgar, Bruchner, Mahler, and Vaughan Williams.
